How To Make A Website With WordPress

So you have your fantastic business idea, you’ve started your business and now you need to know how to make a website.

BUT you’re just starting out and money is tight.

How do you create a website yourself, from scratch, without it looking cheap?

You want a website that looks professional. An amazing place to show off what you and your brand are all about.

It’s actually not as difficult as you probably think. Plus compared to all the other costs of setting up a business it’s relatively cheap.

You can actually start a blog from as little as $3.95 per month (that’s about £3 or just over £36 for the entire year!). If you sign up through my Bluehost link, you’ll also get a free domain name.

I’ll show you how to create your own business website from scratch, from hosting to setting up your website in WordPress.

How To Make A Website From Scratch

If you want to look professional and to be taken seriously you need a business website.

Social media is a great place to start but eventually, you will want somewhere to showcase your products and services.

But it can seem like a daunting task, setting up a website.

Won’t it cost lots of money?

I’m not at all techie so won’t it be difficult?!

You could hire a web developer to build a website for you but in the early days, you might not be able to afford that option.

I taught myself how to do it and I am by no means a techie person!! Today I want to share with you how I did it so that you can do it too.

There are many different ways to set up your website but I want to share the route that I took.

If you buy hosting through Bluehost (more on that later) then they have a special offer available to our lovely readers of $3.95 per month. They also throw in a domain name for free!!

It’s actually really easy to set up a website. There are three simple steps:

  1. Choose your website (also known as domain) name.
  2. Buy web hosting for your site – I use and love Bluehost
  3. Bluehost automatically installs WordPress so that you can to create your website.

So, let’s go through those steps in a bit more detail and we should have you set up with a simple website in under an hour…

#1. Choose your website domain

Now, this took me ages so I know how hard this can be! I procrastinated over what to call my blog for a very long time.

See my post on how to choose a Business Name for more help on this.

I got my domain name for free as part of the Bluehost package which is an amazing deal since my domain was £23.98 to buy and a hosting package over 12 months works out at just £36!

You can do this all at the same time so let’s skip straight to step 2.

#2. Buy web hosting for your website

What on earth is hosting you might wonder? Well, website.com explains it so much better than I ever could:

“Web hosting is a service that allows organizations and individuals to post a website or web page onto the Internet. A web host, or web hosting service provider, is a business that provides the technologies and services needed for the website or webpage to be viewed on the Internet. Websites are hosted, or stored, on special computers called servers.”

Why I choose Bluehost to host my website

I host my website through Bluehost and I love them.

I was a bit nervous as they aren’t based in the UK but it actually doesn’t make any difference.

They are really reliable and offer great support.

If I have a problem I use the Live Chat option and someone has always come back to me immediately. Their customer service is brilliant.

They are also super cheap at $3.95 per month if you sign up for 36 months through my link, $4.95 if you sign up for 24 months or $5.95 if you sign up for 12 months (due in full upfront).

Plus a free domain when you sign up for 12 months or more.

There are companies out there that offer monthly hosting packages. I decided not to go with that as it worked out much more expensive to pay each month in the long run. Plus I would have to remember to keep renewing (and I’m not organised enough to remember that!!) or risk losing readers when my website went down.

Bluehost also offers a 30-day money back guarantee if you change your mind. I figured I had nothing to lose!

I went for the 36 month basic plan to start with as it was the best value and I blimen’ love a bargain!

When I started out I decided to go for shared hosting which is a more affordable option when you’re getting up to speed.

You might want to look at the dedicated hosting as your business grows, when your traffic goes through the roof or if you start selling through your website (to give you added security for your customers’ payment details).

Bluehost can also provide you with a professional business email address using your domain name.

Woohoo, your Bluehost account is all set up! Now you can install WordPress and start building an amazing website…

#3. Install WordPress (done for you automatically by Bluehost!)

I was so confused when I first started looking into how to make a website as there was a WordPress.org and a WordPress.com!

WordPress.org is the one you want because in order to monetise your website you need to be self-hosted (like we’ve done above in step 2) and you can’t do that with WordPress.com.

WordPress has so many styles of website to choose from which makes it much easier to create a stylish, professional look. They call these styles “Themes”.

There are a whole range of free themes or if you prefer you could opt for a premium theme. When I say “premium”, they’re still a really reasonable price and most are around $39 – $49.

For more help on choosing and installing a WordPress theme, have a read of How to Easily Choose the Perfect WordPress Theme for You.

Bluehost and WordPress work brilliantly together and Bluehost installs WordPress for you automatically:

#1. So once you’ve created your new password, you will be asked to choose your WordPress theme. You can easily change this later so don’t worry about picking one, you won’t be stuck with it.

Logging in to your WordPress website

There are two ways to log into your WordPress website so that you can start designing:

  1. Login to Bluehost. Go to “WordPress tools” (on the top menu), then select “Users” on the left-hand side. If you scroll down to the bottom you can log in to your website or…
  2. Alternatively, go to your admin login URL. Enter your login details and voila you’re in! They send all of these details to you in an email (my email was from Mojo Marketplace) so keep them safe!

How to actually set up your blog or website in WordPress

I’ve written a couple of posts to get you started and show you how to actually set up your website or blog in WordPress.

It can feel really daunting but setting up a website is actually really easy. You can do it with WordPress.org in 3 simple steps:

  1. Choose your website (also known as a domain) name.
  2. Buy web hosting for your site – I use and love Bluehost
